C. Non-US Citizens Should Know
Immigration Consequences
As I explained in Immigration Consequences for International
Clients, there is a chance of going to jail when you are convicted
for DWI in New Jersey even for a first offender. This can cause
immigration problems depending on your immigration status. If
you are a non-US citizen, I highly recommend that you should
consult this office. We work with an immigration attorney on
cases of clients that are not U.S. citizens. You do not want
to ruin everything you have built so far in America. You should
do your best to protect your future life. Even if you do not
go to jail, you should remember that some circumstances require
the applicant to submit their driving history in order to apply
for a new visa or to renew your current status. Driving history,
under certain circumstances, is used to measure one’s credibility
in America and having a conviction of DWI can hurt your position,
e.g., in securing or retaining employment, or in situations where
a law-abiding attitude is at issue. If you are a non-US citizen,
you should pay extra attention in general to keeping a good record
to prove that you are a good person. You should be aware of the
immigration consequences of convictions of serious charges and
all drug charges, including DWI in combination with a possession
charge. This office is one of the law firms in New Jersey that
defend international clients in consultation with an immigration
attorney.

1The figure is as of May 29, 2007. Win rate
is defined as the number of clients not convicted for DWI divided
by the total number of clients who were charged with DWI. The
clients are those who retained this office after 2005. Each case
varies. Under any circumstance, we do NOT guarantee a successful
outcome in any individual case.
